A beginner's guide to carrier oils
Share
If you have ever wondered how to actually use an essential oil, the answer usually starts with a carrier oil. Carrier oils are gentle base oils, pressed from nuts, seeds and fruits, that dilute concentrated essential oils and nourish skin and hair on their own. Here is a simple guide to getting started.
What a carrier oil does
Essential oils are highly concentrated and are meant to be diluted before they touch your skin. A carrier oil does exactly that, carrying a few drops of essential oil safely across a larger area. Popular choices include argan, aloe vera, sweet almond and jojoba, each with its own texture and feel.
How to blend
A common starting point is a few drops of essential oil added to a tablespoon of carrier oil, then patch-tested on a small area first. Adjust to your preference and always read the label on both oils. For external and aromatherapy use only.
Using them on their own
Carrier oils are lovely by themselves, too. Many people use argan or aloe vera oil as a simple part of their skin and hair routine, no blending required. Keep them in a cool, dark place with the cap sealed, and they will keep their character for longer.
